Courthouse Mediation Procedures

Follow these court-specific steps when conducting an in-person mediation at the East Boston Municipal Court.

Step 1

Pre-Mediation

After entering the courthouse, proceed through security and go to the second floor. Small Claims sessions are held in Second Session, the courtroom at the far end of the corridor. Summary Process sessions are held in First Session, directly across from the Clerk’s Office.

Let the clerks know that you have arrived. At the start of the session, introduce yourself to the session clerk and offer to give the parties a brief introduction to the mediation process.

Step 2

During Mediation

The courthouse has a designated mediation room directly behind Second Session. The room contains a table, chairs, and a bench and is generally available for mediations.

Police officers and other courthouse personnel may occasionally pass through the room to access other areas of the building, particularly during breaks or while waiting for court sessions to begin. Court staff and attorneys may also use the room when it is not being used for mediation.

If the room is occupied when you need it, check with the Clerk’s Office for an alternative space.

Step 3

Post-Mediation

At the conclusion of the mediation, go to the Clerk’s Office, ask for the documents to be copied, and return the case file. If the case settles, the clerk will likely review the agreement before the parties and date-stamp it.

Before leaving, make sure you have a scan or clear photograph of the completed forms to upload to the court portal.

Add the case information and upload the paperwork under the court case in the portal. If you have trouble uploading the documents or mediated multiple cases during the same session, email the scans to courtmediation@mwi.org.
