MBTA Mediation Information and Referral Page

MBTA employees now have immediate access to mediation services and training provided by MWI. These services are designed to help employees effectively address and resolve conflict.

Mediation

Mediation is a process in which parties agree to work together, with the assistance of a mediator, to discuss their concerns and work out a solution. The mediator helps to facilitate communication and empowers parties to create their own resolution. Mediation is a flexible process that allows the parties to discuss, in confidence, any issues they choose to address and determine the outcome.

Please find suggested language to forward to MBTA employees who you think would benefit from mediation:

“We would like for you to speak with our mediation provider, MWI, about participating in a mediation. As a next step, we will provide your contact information to MWI for mediation services. You will hear from the mediator from MWI within two business days. There is no cost for you to participate. I appreciate you taking the time to speak with the mediator about the process so you can make an informed decision about whether you want to participate. If you are a union member, please let the mediator know if you want your union rep to join you during this initial call or at the mediation. Mediations take place via Zoom during work hours. Thank you.”

Departmental Climate Assessment and Facilitation Services

When a dispute between management and an employee turns out to be a symptom of a larger issue within a department, MWI is available to work with entire departments at the T to diagnose and help resolve the issues. This is accomplished by MWI gathering information from all department members using anonymous surveys and holding confidential follow-up interviews to gather and provide management with a detailed assessment of the state of the department. This information is used to design an action plan that might include a series of mediations to resolve past disputes, followed by a department-wide facilitation to help members vision and define a path forward.

Executive Coaching

Executive Coaching focuses on enhancing the performance, leadership skills, and overall effectiveness of executives and high-potential employees. These one-on-one meetings aim to help with topics including:

  • Leadership Development
  • Performance Enhancement
  • Communication Skills
  • Conflict Resolution

  • Receiving Feedback
  • Strategic Planning
  • And more

Workshops and Training

MWI has delivered various training programs and workshops since 1994 to build the capacity of employees and management to work through their differences on their own. Available training topics include:

  • understanding your current approach to conflict and dealing with differences productively;
  • facilitating productive and meaningful meetings;
  • listening and communicating effectively;
  • using negotiation to create value and building strong working relationships.

Participants will also have opportunities to examine real-life scenarios and develop a strategy to resolve those issues. Each program is designed to be interactive, fun, and provide participants with new skills and tools to apply immediately after each training program. In addition to training employees to manage conflict proactively, MWI has trained thousands of HRBPs, managers, and others to serve as mediators within the company and elsewhere.
